Hello, I’m Saba. My career aspiration is to become a medical professional specializing in either orthopedic or anesthesia medicine. I was placed at Brooks Rehabilitation for my internship, where I had the amazing opportunity to observe and interact with professionals across a variety of rehabilitation specialties. As someone passionate about the science of healing and how the human body responds to injury and treatment, this placement not only aligned with my long-term goals but opened my eyes to the process that goes into healing. The environment at Brooks gave me a real-world look into the clinical and rehabilitative sides of patient care, helping solidify my interest in pursuing a medical career.
During my time at Brooks, I was involved in a lot of scenarios and different points of view that enhanced my understanding of healthcare. I observed physical and occupational therapy sessions, learned how teams of doctors, nurses and therapists collaborate to create recovery plans, and saw how communication between providers and patients is essential for healing. I also gained insight into patient intake, basic medical documentation, and rehabilitation equipment. One of the most valuable skills I gained was showing tough love to your patients, like many of the therapists and nurses, they showed a kind of stern and resilient care for their patients making them do the hard things they needed to do even when non favorable, this is a mindset that will help me in the future.
Participating in the AnnieRuth Foundation’s summer internship program was instrumental in preparing me for future success. The experience not only gave me direct visual and hands-on exposure to a healthcare setting but also helped me grow professionally through workshops and mentorship. It challenged me to think critically about what kind of care provider I want to become and how I can impact my community through healthcare. I’m grateful for the support and access the AnnieRuth Foundation provided, and I know this experience has laid a foundation for the journey ahead.
