Student Internship Experiences

Javee B.

During my internship experience with the AnnieRuth Foundaiton’s summer internship program, I had the opportunity to interact with members of Baptist South, where I gained firsthand experience in the hospital setting. I was able to work closely with other healthcare professionals and started off as a novice by assisting patients just how CNAs do. This helped me observe real-time procedures as they did their rounds with their patients, allowing me to witness the culture and pace of hospital life. It was a great introduction, and I was able build a foundation of my understanding in hospitals.

One of the most exciting moments was a live PET scan, where I witnessed how imaging is used to diagnose diseases through technology. I also got exposure to phlebotomy procedures, handling blood samples and learning how bone core samples are collected. These experiences gave me a unique look into the technical side of healthcare such as pathology. It strengthened the idea that every department in the hospital is connected, each working to provide for the others.

The AnnieRuth Foundation’s summer internship program helped me develop a deeper appreciation for human anatomy and the importance of empathy in patient care. It’s not all about doing your job and working to fix some issue, but there is also the social side where you need to understand and communication with patients through words. Overall, the program confirmed my passion for studying medicine and strengthened my desire to pursue a career in radiology.
