Student Internship Experiences

Aniya M.

My career aspiration is to be an obstetrician-gynecologist (OBGYN), and I was lucky to be placed at multiple medical offices to complete my internship experience. I was first placed at Full Circle Women’s Health Clinic, and I had the privilege of working with Dr. Adams. I also had the opportunity to work with Dr. Sutton, an endocrinologist, and Dr. Price, a nephrologist, as I traveled to various locations throughout the week. This exposure allowed me to explore multiple medical specialties and get a more well-rounded perspective of the medical field.

While working with Dr. Sutton, I met a patient with Huntington’s disease, a condition I had not previously encountered. Afterward, I got a homework assignment to research and learn about Huntington’s, which I thought was impactful, especially after meeting someone affected by it. I also learned how to examine the thyroid gland, which was a unique experience. With Dr. Adams, I met patients at various stages of pregnancy. I learned about complications that can arise during pregnancy. Since she is in my desired career field, I made sure to ask her many questions about being an OB/GYN, her journey through medical school, her experiences in the field, and any advice she had for someone just starting. During my time with Dr. Price, I visited a dialysis suite where I observed both peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis in action. Witnessing how peritoneal dialysis works was especially fascinating. I also learned how to measure blood pressure and got the opportunity to hear patients’ perspectives on dialysis, which was a memorable experience.

Participating in the AnnieRuth Foundation’s Summer Internship Program was instrumental in preparing me for future success. It gave me early exposure to the realities of a medical career and provided me with insight I likely wouldn’t have gained until much later in my journey. The program pushed me out of my comfort zone by placing me in new environments.  It also introduced me to medical specialties I had never considered before, broadening my perspective of what’s possible in medicine. Most importantly, the people I met, both my mentors and patients, shared wisdom, advice, and encouragement that I will both remember and use for years to come. I am truly grateful for the experience and how it has enhanced my passion for medicine.
