Student Internship Experiences

Edwin L.

I personally aspire to become a physician in the future and run my own practice.  As part of the AnnieRuth Foundation’s Summer Internship Program, I was matched into multiple medical rotations to shadow an array of physicians at Baptist and St. Vincent’s. Throughout the internship, I was a part of the neurosurgery department at Baptist and was matched with Dr. Rawls (gastroenterologist) at St. Vincent’s.  It was a great experience asking questions of the physicians.  I received a great amount of research advice and support on my personal projects, like having a good meta-analysis and systematic review for publication. Over at St. Vincent’s, Dr. Rawls offered me the greatest gastroenterology experience with real patient learning, personal research, and advice on any topics I had questions about.  At the clinic with Dr. Rawls, many patients showed high respect and mentioned that I was under an exceptional mentor. Seeing firsthand cases in different specialties and the emotional gratitude from patients helped solidify my future aspiration to become a physician. Being with physicians allowed me to learn more about the body for my well-being, as well as have the skillset to assist others in their most vulnerable times for the greater good of humanity.

The AnnieRuth Foundation provided me with an invaluable experience by allowing me to truly experience the world of medicine.  I am extremely grateful for the experience.
