During my internship at the UF Health Proton Therapy Institute (UFHPTI) and at Dr. Rizk’s office, I was able to gain hands-on experience in two different, yet important areas of healthcare. These internships broadened my understanding of medical practices and have helped me solidify my passion for pursuing a career in the medical field. Through direct observation and active participation, I learned about the intricacies of patient care, the application of advanced medical technologies, and the importance of collaboration in delivering quality healthcare.
At UFHPTI, I was introduced to proton therapy, a highly precise form of radiation treatment used primarily for cancer patients. I observed how the medical team tailored treatment plans to each patient, utilizing the precision of proton beams to minimize damage to surrounding healthy tissues. One particularly memorable experience was witnessing a patient’s last treatment session. After months of careful coordination and planning between the radiation oncologists, physicists, dosimetrists, and nurses this patient was able to ring the bell and walk out cancer free. In contrast, my time at Dr. Rizk’s office provided insight into the more hands-on aspect of medical care.
