I’ve wanted to work as a veterinarian since I was young because I love animals and want to take care of them. I was thrilled to be assigned to Riverside Animal Hospital and Netta Furry Babies pet groomer as part of my AnnieRuth Foundation Internship, where I gained practical experience working with a range of animals. I helped with basic animal care, watched surgical procedures, and discovered how important pet grooming is to their general health. My resolve to seek a career in veterinary medicine has been strengthened by this experience, which has also provided me with important knowledge about the duties and benefits of working in this industry.
Building on that experience, I was able to help with a number of valuable projects. I prepared basic medical vaccinations, assisted with animal boarding, and observed the veterinarian and vet-techs performing routine check-ups at the veterinary clinic. I acquired knowledge about common medical conditions and their treatments, as well as how to properly and humanely handle animals and decipher pet behavior clues. I helped with bathing, brushing, and nail cutting at the grooming center, which taught me the value of patience and cleanliness. These exercises improved my ability to communicate and increased my self-assurance in a medical environment. All in all, these encounters assisted me in developing the interpersonal skills necessary for a career in veterinary medicine.
Enrolling in the summer internship program offered by the AnnieRuth Foundation was a life-changing event that set me up for future success. I was able to develop both professionally and personally through this program, in addition to exploring my career goals in a practical environment. My work ethic, time management, and interpersonal communication all improved as a result of the Foundation’s advice, mentoring, and practical experiences. Most significantly, I gained self-assurance and clarity to follow my dream of becoming a veterinarian by being part of an organization that encourages academic and professional achievement. I’m eager to keep expanding on the experiences I’ve had and feel more prepared to handle obstacles in the future.
