My name is Abigail, and I am a 2025 AnnieRuth Summer Internship award recipient. With my career aspiration being a companion animal veterinarian, I was lucky enough to be placed at multiple locations to shadow under groomers, veterinarians, and vet technicians that shared invaluable information about what it’s like being entrusted to take care of our precious pets. I was placed at award winning NettaFurryBabies grooming, Alta Bluff Animal Hospital for companion animals, and Riverside Animal Hospital specializing in exotic pets.
Under Ms. Johnette Wiggins, whose business was ranked best of Florida Grooming Services in 2023, I was able to see first-hand just how talented she is styling her clients. I learned a variety of grooming techniques, how to adapt to different situations, as well as how to handle pets of unique temperaments and sizes. During my time at Alta Bluff Animal Hospital I interned under multiple veterinarians including Dr. Gilbert and Dr. Kirk, as well as lead technician Ms. Rachel. There I learned restraining techniques, how to use diagnostic equipment, neutering, spaying, dental procedures, reading charts, and even monitoring ECGs during surgery. While I was placed at Riverside Animal Hospital under Dr. Rossi, I was able to learn different techniques and procedures required when dealing with exotics as well as an in-depth understanding of medical terminology and diseases.
I am incredibly grateful for all that I have been able to experience through my internship with the AnnieRuth Foundation and its partners. Prior to starting this program, I was never granted the opportunity to personally learn from profound medical professionals, especially while in high school. This internship has provided me with the chance to connect with doctors, technicians, groomers, and other professionals in the veterinary field who each taught me important lessons that I will never forget. The knowledge and hands-on training I received are truly irreplaceable. The information and experience gained over these six weeks will play a significant role in helping me pursue a career dedicated to treating and caring for animals in the future.
