Student Internship Experiences

Lujain A.

Through the AnnieRuth Foundation’s summer internship program, I had an opportunity to return to pursue my interest in healthcare. My career aspiration is to become a pediatrician, specializing in treating the next generation, however this experience made me consider family medicine. I had the chance to work in numerous of healthcare facilities for my internship, such as Baptist Health and the Women’s and Children’s Center of the Florida Department of Health, where I was exposed to a range of public health areas.

I took part in a variety of hands-on learning experiences during the program. With the Jacksonville Transportation Authority, I started the summer by taking a tour of Jacksonville and learning about the importance of public transportation. A milestone in my training was reached when I obtained my Basic Life Support certification. During my time shadowing Dr. Foy at Baptist Health, I witnessed personally how crucial enduring connections are in family medicine but also learned how to draw a needle. I learned more about mother and child health during my internship with Dr. Pope. During my training, I learned about the Epic health database and clinical documentation from Dr. Nelly, a physician assistant. I was even given permission by the neurosurgeons to see a live surgery in progress in the operating room.

My future has been impacted by my involvement in the AnnieRuth Foundation’s summer internship program. In addition to giving me clinical experience, it confirmed my resolve to become a physician. I am now ready to go forward on my path with confidence and purpose because of the mentoring and community involvement I received. I am really grateful for receiving another opportunity and want to use what I’ve learned to positively influence other people’s lives.
