About The Northeast Florida Medical Society

The Northeast Florida Medical Society (NEFMS) is a duly constituted organization consisting of physicians and a registered component society in Region III of the National Medical Association (NMA) and its state constituent organization, the Florida State Medical Association, Inc. (FSMA). It is one of five metropolitan sectors of FSMA: South Florida/Miami-Broward, Gulf Bay Area/Tampa-St Petersburg, Atlantic Central/Daytona-Orlando, West Florida (Tallahassee-Pensacola).

Florida/Jacksonville Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical Association was founded in 1896 as a minority physician, dentist, and pharmacy organization for continuing medical education in the care of illnesses common in African Americans, primarily because of the very small numbers of allied health professionals. In 1960, approximately sixty African American physicians, and a lesser number of allied professionals, were practicing in Florida. The NEFMS began its revitalized existence as a “Medical Section” component of the Florida/Jacksonville Medical Dental Association in 1994 at a Florida State Medical Association meeting in Orlando, FL.  The NEFMS section now constitutes the local affiliate organization of the National Medical Association (Washington, D.C.) and its state component – the Florida State Medical Association.

Currently, there are over one thousand African American physicians in Florida, with approximately 150 located in Northeast Florida, and they represent a fair number of specialty areas in institutional and private practices.

MISSION STATEMENT:

The NEFMS’ mission is to provide a common forum for physicians to promote excellence in the practice of medicine among its membership for the health care delivery to all citizens in Northeast Florida. Major goals include the eradication of religious, racial and gender discrimination from northeast Florida’s medical institutions, to increase public awareness concerning adverse risk factors inherent in modern living and encourage the altering of lifestyles to prevent early onset of disease, and to mentor aspiring African American medical professionals.
