The AnnieRuth Foundation partnered with Impact Christian Church for a rewarding volunteer experience.  Participants of the summer internship program unloaded food, organized, and bagged food items.  They also loaded bags into the trunks of those who show up for the truck-to-trunk food distribution.

The AnnieRuth Foundation hosted its annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony. This virtual awards ceremony was hosted by Barry Farmer. During the ceremony, Min. Stavious Powell blessed the food; Reggie Shareef (ATL) delivered the keynote address; former scholarship award recipient, My Nguyen spoke about socioeconomic realities of being an underserved student in a college setting; pianist, Genesis Dawkins serenaded the audience with a Disney selection and a Peanuts selection; and seven very deserving students received a scholarship to attend the college/university of their choice.

Participants of the AnnieRuth Foundation summer internship program were engaged in a workshop that focused on their personal Brand.  This workshop, facilitated by Ms. Jenifer (Orlando, FL), introduced participants to what’s needed to differentiate themselves from others.

This was the last workshop of the program’s year!  Because this is a points-based program, we will now determine who gets to move to the next phase of the program…the internship experience.

During the ceremony, Pastor Dr. Levon Darthard (Believing Faith Christian Worship Center) blessed the food; Jason Hardwick delivered the keynote address; former scholarship award recipient, Adriel Strickland shared her journey from Paxon to Pennsylvania; songstress, Aniyah Kargbo and Anisha Green wowed the audience with their vocals; and five very deserving students received a scholarship to attend the college/university of their choice.

During the ceremony, Pastor Terry Hill, Jr. (Praise 107.9FM) blessed the food, Saxophonist, Evan Seltzer wowed the audience with renditions of Stevie Wonder (Sir Duke) and Dave Brubeck (Take Five) and four very deserving students received a scholarship to attend the college/university of their choice.

Participants of the 2020 summer internship program met to relax, play games, listen to music, participate in a ‘talent showcase,’ and eat good foods. Additionally, fashion designer DaniAnn Rawls and Simone Garvey facilitated a workshop on Self Confidence & Stage Presence.

At the end of the day, a luck student walked away with a brand new Hover Board!

The AnnieRuth Foundation hosted its 7th Annual Christmas party at Desert Winds & Caravan Trails Apartments (underserved communities located on the south side of Jacksonville). Youth ages 0 – 16 and senior citizens received toys, gifts and Christmas stockings. The entire community enjoyed food, music, arts & crafts and outdoor games.

The AnnieRuth Foundation, in collaboration with Perfectly Suited Career Consulting, hosted its inaugural #ROYAL Youth Leadership Explosion (ROYAL, Reclaiming our Youth as Leaders). This city-wide, youth leadership conference took place at the main library (downtown Jacksonville). The purpose is to inspire, encourage and empower youth to exhibit leadership behaviors at home, in the community, at school and on their job. The target audience was 350 (which included youth ages 12 – 24 and their parents/guardians).

The AnnieRuth Foundation hosted its 5th Annual Christmas Party at Eureka Gardens Apartments. The party was exclusively for CLUB kids and their invited guests (who were also residents of Eureka Gardens). Attendees participated in interactive discussions focused on ‘the real meaning of Christmas.’ they also enjoyed singing Christmas carols, playing indoor activites, playing outdoor games and dancing to music. Everyone in attendance received a Christmas stocking (filled with goodies), a toy of their choice and lunch. Additionally, each CLUB kid received a brand new bicycle (compliments of Plumbers & Pipefitters, #234).

A special ‘thanks’ goes out to the AnnieRuth Foundation’s 2018 Summer Internship Program who unselfishly ‘gave back to the community’ by volunteering at this event!

The AnnieRuth Foundation hosted its 2017 Summer Internship Program Reception at Red Lobster, Baymeadows Road. Eleven semi-finalists were pleasantly surprised as it was revealed that their essay was written well enough for them to advance to the next phase of the program. Red Lobster’s management team made the students feel really special by providing food, drinks and gift cards in acknowledgment of their accomplishments.

The Chapter, a staunch supporter of the AnnieRuth Foundation, took a moment to express their purpose of promoting education as a life long experience as well as serving the Jacksonville community through partnerships with local nonprofit organizations.

The AnnieRuth enrolled four students in Chinese school; a structured educational forum sponsored by the Jacksonville Chinese Association (JCA). The mission of the Chinese school is to promote Chinese language and culture by providing educational opportunities to students from all backgrounds and all ages. Classes are held on Sundays at UNF from 2:00PM – 4:00PM.

The AnnieRuth Foundation will participate in the Department of Health in Duval County’s (DOH) “I Choose” Youth Empowerment Rally. The goal is to equip young people with knowledge, tools and resources so that they will begin to make healthy life choices. The event, designed for 13 – 24 year olds, will offer educational workshops for both parents and youth, indoor activities, outdoor physical fitness activities and local talent showcases. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

The evening at MOCA consisted of networking opportunities, heavy hors d’oevres, photos with Shannon Miller and a presentation on Comcast’s enhanced technology that will enable millions of viewers to watch about 4,500 hours of live-streaming video of every olympic event.

Today, four finalist were informed that they are recipients of the AnnieRuth Foundation’s 2016 Summer Internship Program. These four students will be placed in a safe, professional environment that aligns with their career aspirations.

Zacari Rogers – Zacari desires to become a Naval Officer (concentration in journalism) and interned at the Jacksonville Free Press.
Keshon Mabry – Keshon desires to become a Licensed Practical Nurse and interned at the Florida Training Academy.
TaNia Anderson – TaNia desires to become a Buyer in the Fashion Merchandising industry and interned at Meow & Barks Boutique.
Earl ‘EJ’ Robinson – Earl desires to obtain a career in Mass Communications and interned at Praise 107.9FM.

The AnnieRuth Foundation participated in Family Support Service’s community event, Party in the Park for Prevention. The event was held at Edward Waters College: Adams-Jenkins Community Sports & Music Complex. The theme was healthy and safe families. Families participated in fun-filled activities as they learned about various prevention services offered in the Jacksonville area.

Red Lobster (Baymeadows location) hosted a reception in honor of 10 students who are advancing to the next phase of the AnnieRuth Foundation’s 2016 Summer Internship Program. Management and staff created a relaxed atmosphere for the students and their parents; providing food and drinks to everyone’s satisfaction. They even presented each student with a gift card to congratulate them on their achievement!

The reception was hosted to inform students that of the 23 applications received, their essay score ranked high enough for them to advance to the next phase of the program; the interview phase! The parents were in on the surprise and ensured that their child arrived to the event oblivious as to what was about to take place. The students were relieved and delighted to learn the news.

During the interview phase, students will compete for their ‘dream job.’ The one male and one female who interview best will be placed in a professional environment that aligns with their career aspirations.

Its purpose was not only to spotlight accomplishments made over the past year but most importantly, to celebrate and recognize our dedicated and committed volunteers. All volunteers were invited to attend this free outdoor, fun-filled event. It’s our way to say ‘thank you’ for all you do in support of the AnnieRuth Foundation. For the second consecutive year, the AnnieRuth Foundation will be recognized by the Mayor’s Commission on the Status of Women for the great work that it is doing in Jacksonville communities. Honorees and invited guests were greeted by Tangi K. Williams, Commission Chair. In addition, the audience learned about each honoree in terms of their dedication and commitment to the First Coast.

The Mayor’s Commission on the Status of Women was established as an advisory commission in 1972 by Mayor Hans G. Tanzler Jr., becoming a full commission under the leadership of Mayor Jake Godbold in 1982. Its mission is to serve as a catalyst for moving all women forward by educating the community, advocating on behalf of women’s issues and celebrating the accomplishments of women.

The AnnieRuth Foundation hosted a Christmas ‘meet & greet’ on Sunday, December 20th at University Plaza Apartments (located behind UF Health). The event included information sharing, toys for everyone, a bicycle “chance drawing,” t-shirt give-a-ways and light refreshments…fun for the entire family!

In 2016, the AnnieRuth Foundation will begin hosting educational workshops on-site at University Plaza Apartments. This event was a fun way to introduce the AnnieRuth Foundation to the residents while at the same time spread Christmas cheer!

Additionally, Santa was on site taking photos with the kiddies!

The AnnieRuth Foundation joined forces with Operation Homefront as they hosted their Holiday Meals for Military Families event. Volunteers of the AnnieRuth Foundation were on hand to assist with decorations, registration, food distribution and the clean-up effort.

Operation Homefront is a nonprofit organization that provides emergency financial and other assistance to military families on the First Coast.

Three lucky families were selected to receive a fully cooked Thanksgiving dinner, prepared by Bow Leg’z Bar-b-Que. The dinners (prepared to accommodate a family of five) consisted of turkey breast, dressing, green beans, macaroni and cheese, dinner rolls and an apple pie.

The AnnieRuth Foundation participated in A Day of Remembrance, hosted by Northeast Florida Community Action Agency. The event focused on disaster preparedness, wellness and educational resources for low-income consumers. Despite inclement weather conditions, over 100 residents showed up at Emmitt Reed Center (Jacksonville) to learn about services local vendors provide to the public, receive educational material, participate in CPA demonstrations, receive free bike helmets, enjoy free food and receive lots of give-a-aways.

The AnnieRuth Foundation, in partnership with Comcast and Family Support Services of North Florida, hosted a health & wellness presentation at Oceanway Elementary School. The event was designed for 4th grade students and their parents. It’s goal was to introduce Family Support Services’ STEPS program as well as to educate youth on the importance of developing good habits such as eating healthy and exercising routinely (in an effort to combat childhood illnesses and diseases such as obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, etc.). Students received book bags filled with school supplies, give-a-ways, nutritious recipes and fresh fruits and vegetables to take home and enjoy.

The AnnieRuth Foundation hosted its second annual, Cruising for our Communities benefit event Saturday, July 11, 2015 aboard the Foxy Lady. Keitha Nelson, WTLV-12 news anchor, served as emcee and Lynnea Maystrick, Sr. Director at Family Support Services, served as keynote speaker. Ms. Maystrick shared her personal story dealing with nonprofits as well as the added value that nonprofit organizations such as the AnnieRuth Foundation bring to Jacksonville communities.

Cruising for our Communities is our opportunity to invite friends and family members on a 2-hour cruise down the St. John’s River and update them on our programs and services of which we are so very proud to offer to Jacksonville communities. During this year’s cruise, we were able to introduce our 2015 Summer Internship award recipient, Daisy Dabney to our guests. Also recognized were: Plumbers and Pipefitters (#234), W.W. Gay Mechanical Contractors and Lee and Cates Glass; three companies that are joining forces to ensure that our building is ready to occupy by the end of 2015 so that we can better serve the community. A special “thank you” was sent to event sponsors including the University of Phoenix, Jacksonville Alumni Chapter.

Over 125 guests enjoyed the evening which consisted of live music played by Dr. Ellen Chavis, comedic entertainment brought on by Lady A.J., good food prepared by Annie Ru’s catering and great people!

A portion of the proceeds from this event was given to the Maritime License Training Company (MLTC). MLTC gives back to the community by offering scholarships to men and women who are unemployed and/or underemployed; providing them an opportunity to become positive contributors of society. Graduates of this six-month program can transition into the Maritime industry earning $30K with the possibility of earning a six figure salary at some point in their career.

The AnnieRuth Foundation collaborated with Julia Leggett’s Pillow Project. The collaboration yielded over 300 pillows! Collected pillows were presented to children who live in underserved communities who do not have a pillow to call their own. On this day, pillows, inscribed with a bible verse, were distributed to children who live at the Sulzbacher Center.

The AnnieRuth Foundation, in partnership with Comcast and the Duval County Extension Office, hosted a health & wellness presentation at S.P. Livingston Elementary School. The event was designed for 5th grade students and their parents. It’s goal is to educate youth on the importance of eating healthy and exercising (in an effort to combat juvenile diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and other common childhood diseases and illnesses). Participants received fresh fruits and vegetables (purchased from our local Farmer’s Market and washed and pre-packaged by local businesses). Students also received an AnnieRuth t-shirt and back-sack. The Honorable Connie Hall attended the event and expressed her satisfaction with all aspects of the presentation.

Julia Legggett, in collaboration with the AnnieRuth Foundation, hosted its first annual Pillow Drive. Over 200 pillows were collected! The pillows were inscribed with a bible verse and distributed to children living at the Sulzbacher Center as well as those living in other underserved communities.

The purpose of the program is to encourage students in grades sixth through ninth to effectively pursue post-secondary education after successfully graduating high school. The AnnieRuth Foundation hosted its 2nd annual Christmas party at Monaco Arms apartments. The event included indoor arts & crafts for senior citizens, organized outdoor games & activities for youth and a shoe give-a-way. Additionally, residents were entertained by violinist Kaylin Peavie, the New Mt. Moriah AME Church Choir and Comedian David Emanuel. Lunch was provided for everyone! Music was provided by the Legacy Music Co., LLC and Santa was on site taking photos with the kiddies!

The AnnieRuth Foundation joined forces with Operation Homefront as they hosted their annual Christmas Toy Give-a-way. Twenty-four volunteers from the AnnieRuth Foundation were on hand to manage the registration table, assist with toy distribution and assist with the book give-a-way. Military families expressed their genuine gratitude for the warm greetings and gifts that they received.

Operation Homefront is a nonprofit organization that provides emergency financial and other assistance to military families on the First Coast.

The AnnieRuth Foundation hosted a two-hour Christmas arts & crafts session with senior citizens at Eureka Gardens Apartments. Volunteers took the lead as the senior group sang Christmas carols, made Christmas cards, decorated Christmas stockings and played a game of Christmas BINGO. The group also enjoyed a refreshing mug of eggnog, hot chocolate and holiday cookies.

On Saturday, November 15, 2014, the AnnieRuth Foundation hosted its annual fundraiser, Honoring a Community Legend. The 2014 recipient was none other than Alfred “Al” Austin. Honoring a Community Legend is the forum used by the AnnieRuth Foundation to acknowledge unsung heroes and heroines. Those individuals who have made significant contributions in the city of Jacksonville because it was what they were predestined to do; rather than doing it with an expectation to be rewarded. Austin was selected because of outstanding achievements made as an athlete, an educator and a mentor. “We’ve all heard the saying, give them their roses while they can smell them,” said Executive Director, DeAndrous Wilcox. “Well,that’s exactly what Honoring a Community Legend is all about; acknowledging accomplishments during the lifetime of an individual who has made great sacrifices in order to enhance the lives of others.”

The evening consisted of dinner, entertainment and reflections by Austin’s friends, classmates, teammates and relatives. Austin received special presentations by Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., the office of Nikolai Vitti, and the office of Councilwoman E. Denise Lee. Angela Spears read a Proclamation on behalf of Mayor Alvin Brown; proclaiming November 15, 2014 as Alfred Austin Day in the city of Jacksonville.

As a part of the event, three individuals received The Alfred Austin Award for exhibiting characteristics of Austin:

· Joyous Burden – Outstanding Athlete
· Ebony Griffin – Outstanding Educator
· Sheila Seymour Pennick – Outstanding Mentor

The AnnieRuth Foundation, in partnership with Comcast and the Florida Department of Health in Duval County, hosted a health & fitness workshop at Eureka Gardens. The focus was combating Juvenile diabetes. Participants participated in an interactive discussion on the importance of eating healthy. Additionally, a certified nutritionist prepared a healthy meal and spoke to the importance of reading labels, portion sizes and eating whole grain foods.

Melanie Lawson and Tarik Minor served as MCs. State Representative Mia Jones delivered the keynote address. The evening also consisted of live music, comedic entertainment, heavy hor d’oeuvres, desserts and adult beverages.

The AnnieRuth Foundation participated in an interview panel sponsored by the Society of Human Resources Management Jacksonville Chapter in partnership with Ready4Work (a nationally recognized program that assists ex-offenders with re-entry into the community and workforce, effectively leading clients toward a productive life).

Executive Director, Dee Wilcox, was one of four panelist who asked questions of the interviewers that they would expect to be asked during a real life interview. Participants were given the opportunity to ask questions of the panel and each participant received constructive feedback based on responses to questions, professionalism and mannerisms.

Community Partners such as Comcast, the Florida Department of Health and D’Mor, Inc. provided funding, free health screenings and healthy snacks for all.

This event, sponsored by Duval County Public Schools in collaboration with local community partners, was held at Everbank stadium. Hundreds of youth from the First Coast were entertained by local talent as they participated in a 5K race and a variety of other games and interactive activities.

Cigarette smoking has been identified as the most important source of preventable morbidity (disease and illness) and premature mortality (death) worldwide. Tobacco Treatment Specialist, Solomon Coles was on hand sharing literature regarding the dangers of tobacco usage and the effects of being exposed to second-hand smoke.

On April 19, the AnnieRuth Foundation, in partnership with the Florida Department of Health in Duval County, hosted an Easter Egg Hunt at Eureka Gardens Community Center. As the event was getting ready to unfold, down came the rain. Volunteers of the Foundation immediately executed “Plan B”; creating an indoor carnival-like atmosphere. Over 100 residents visited the nail station, face painting station and the game room. Residents had a blast as they created their own arts & crafts, participated in dance contests and took photos with the Easter bunny! Parents visited the Health Department’s booth and received diabetes risk assessments and parting gifts. Parents who visited the booth were also given a ticket which made them eligible to win an Easter basket filled with candy and gifts suitable for adults. Although the weather prohibited an outdoor hunt for eggs, each guest left with a bag filled with candy, colored hard-boiled eggs and plastic eggs filled with toys, candy and prize money.

During this interaction, residents were informed on programs and services offered by the Foundation and were also invited to the Great Easter Egg Hunt that will take place on-site Saturday, April 19.

The AnnieRuth Foundation was featured as the Non-profit of Choice at the Still I Rise: Emmett stage play. Produced by Mega Mind Productions, this play depicted the life of Emmett Till, a young man who was lynched and brutally murdered in 1955 for supposedly flirting with a white woman. The play was written to make you laugh, make you cry but most importantly to inspire you to strengthen your personal commitment to justice, equality and diversity.

As the Non-profit of Choice, the AnnieRuth Foundation received a full-page ad in the program and had an opportunity to address the audience during intermission.

The AnnieRuth Foundation hosted a Focus Group Meeting for youth, parents and senior citizens of Eureka Gardens Apartments. The purpose was to obtain input from residents regarding the programs that they would like for the AnnieRuth Foundation to bring on-site to address their immediate needs. Participants openly provided valuable feedback that will be used to tailor workshops to accommodate the needs of the Eureka Gardens community.

The AnnieRuth Foundation, in partnership with the American Cancer Society and Baptist Health, hosted a cancer awareness seminar for the residents of Eureka Gardens Apartments. This FREE one-hour seminar focused on breast cancer and colorectal cancer awareness as well as available resources to cover costs associated with cancer screenings. Each pre-registered participant received a $10 Walmart gift card!

The AnnieRuth Foundation was featured as the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) “non-profit of the month” during the month of January 2014. The meeting was held at Latitude 30 (Jacksonville, FL). Benefits included: a full page ad in SHRM’s January newsletter, a vendor booth and a five-minute opportunity to share information about the foundation with attendees.

The AnnieRuth Foundation (in partnership with Winn Dixie, store #191 and the Florida Department of Health) hosted a Christmas party for youth and seniors citizens of Eureka Garden Apartments. Approximately 300 youth and 50 senior citizens attended the event! Nearly 3 dozen volunteers were on hand to greet guests. Party goers engaged in indoor arts & crafts, outdoor organized games, outdoor music, lunch, entertainment by professionals around the city, and photo opportunities with Santa Claus. Every child and senior who attended the party received a Christmas present!

The AnnieRuth Foundation participated in Unity Fest, a full-day, indoor/outdoor event that took place at Brewsters’ Megaplex; 956 N. University Boulevard (formerly Plush, Leopard and Rain lounges). The day began with a scavenger hunt and included: an opportunity to feed the hungry (recipients arrived on-site), a chili cook-off, a step show and a concert. There were prizes and surprises along with opportunities to assist those in need.

The AnnieRuth Foundation facilitated a résumé writing workshop (What Employers Want) to Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) students at both Terry Parker and Sandalwood High schools. AVID programs target students in the ‘academic middle’ and create a learning environment which prepares them for college and life challenges that they may encounter as they transition into adulthood.

Participants were excited to learn how to develop a ‘winning’ resume, what questions to ask prior to the interview and what to do in an effort to ensure a successful interview.

AnnieRuth’s Executive Director, Dee Wilcox and board member, Veronica Richardson-Ward were extremely pleased with the fact that students at both schools were engaged, asked thought provoking questions and added to the dialogue by sharing personal experiences; evidence that learning had occurred.

The AnnieRuth Foundation participated in the Human Resources Panel Discussion sponsored by the Society of Human Resources Management Jacksonville Chapter in partnership with Ready4Work.

Executive Director, Dee Wilcox, moderated the panel discussion as four Human Resources professionals (Todney Bynes, Julie Fagen, Mara Walker and Tom Jordan) shared their knowledge and experiences with an audience of nearly 40 participants. The panel discussion allowed participants to understand the various phases of the hiring process (e.g., developing a resume, scheduling the interview, techniques of interviewing, job fair etiquette and work ethics; expectations of the employee once on the job).

Participants added to the dialogue by sharing experiences that did not lead to positive outcomes. In most cases, examples that participants shared reinforced information that provided by the panel.

After the session, Chad Hoffman, Assistant Director, Employment Services Program Head, Ready4Work commented, “The HR Panel Discussion was absolutely first class and the feedback we have received has been phenomenal. It was such a great benefit for our clients to receive direct and unbiased counsel from actual hiring managers who are esteemed professionals in their field.”

The AnnieRuth Foundation purchased a table at the 48th Annual NAACP Freedom Fund Dinner which took place Wednesday, November 6 at 7:00 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront hotel. Attendees were impressed with the dynamic message delivered by keynote speaker, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (18th Congressional District, Houston, TX). Congresswoman Jackson eloquently stated that it is not acceptable for “members” to be connected to an organization in name only, on the contrary, each member of any organization should aspire to elevate that organization by assisting with carrying out its “mission.”

Members of the Foundation gave a standing ovation as one of its board members, Solomon Coles, received an award in acknowledgement of being a life-time member of the NAACP.

Seven locally and nationally renowned comedians took the stage and brought laughter to the entire family! The event took place at Abyssinia Missionary Baptist Church. AnnieRuth Foundation participated in The Beauty within You Project. This event is designed for girls between the ages of 8 – 18. The purpose of the conference is to help girls recognize, embrace, love and respect the beauty that they have within. Participants enjoyed a delightful breakfast, attended break-out sessions and had lots of fun! AnnieRuth Foundation provided volunteers to assist with the set-up and break-down of the event. The Foundation also registered 8 adolescents who all participated in the program.

This is a forum for citizens of the community to get to know members of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office as well as to discuss any community issues/concerns. AnnieRuth Foundation participated in the Back to School Supply Give-a-way. This event, sponsored by First Baptist Church of Oakland, PepsiCo and the Duval County School Board, was hosted at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds and provided school supplies to over 4,000 children in need. The AnnieRuth Foundation provided 17 adult volunteers to assist with this event.

AnnieRuth Foundation, in partnership with the Women of Color Cultural Foundation, sponsored the 2013 ACE Youth Summit. This outdoor, fun-filled event focused on combating childhood obesity. There were approximately 200 youth from around the city who participated in pep rallies, games and contests (all focused on healthy living). McDonalds was on-site and provided apple slices to the youth and representatives from the Duval County Health Department encourage youth to eat healthy. This event was held on the campus of Abyssinia Missionary Baptist Church.

Volunteers of AnnieRuth joined Sheriff John Rutherford during the Zone 6 Neighborhood Crime Prevention Walk. The purpose of the walk was to listen to citizens of the community regarding the issues that exist in their neighborhood. Members of the Sheriff Advisory Council (ShAdCo) were there to raise an awareness of their organization. Volunteers of AnniRuth shared information about the Foundation including the fact that the organization will be operational in January 2014.
